Technology the Double Edged Sword: Work Life Balance

Posted on February 6th, 2024

Technology has undeniably revolutionized the way we work. With email, instant messaging, and collaborative tools we are connected 24/7. It has enhanced productivity but also blurred the lines between work and personal life, making it crucial to strike a balance for overall well-being. The constant accessibility presents a double edged sword for work-life balance, offering both opportunities and challenges.

We have been living in a hustle culture, where "work hard and play harder" has been our mantra for long. Things changed during the pandemic, where the world came to a standstill, many started rethinking the hustle culture. There were new work culture decisions being made : flexible work hours, toiling away less in office for hours altogether to hybrid working. With this new flexibility we can see a greater demand for work-life balance.

How has Technology contributed towards Work-Life Balance?

  • Learning and Development: With readily accessible online courses, and resources, there is constant opportunity for learning and personal growth, that is enriching their lives beyond work.
  • Flexibility and Autonomy: Approximately 43% of employees now telecommute, at least occasionally to work. This allows for flexible schedules, and potentially reducing work-life conflicts (Upwork, 2023).
  • Accessibility and Connectivity: 97% of Americans own a cellphone. This facilitates communication with loved ones and colleagues, potentially reducing feelings of, isolation ( Pew Research Center, 2023)

How has technology impacted work-life conflicts?

  • Distractions and Interruptions: The never ending smartphone notifications can trigger attention shifts every 4-6 minutes, hindering in focus, and relaxation ( University of California, Irvine, 2015).
  • Always-on-Culture: About 60% of employees check work email outside of work hours, leading to work creep and burnout (Microsoft, 2023).
  • Digital Addiction: 31% of Americans report feeling addicted to their smartphones. This has led to negatively impacting their mental, and physical health (Statista, 2023).
  • FOMO (Fear of Missing Out): Remote work anxiety or FOMO is crippling employees mental health. Some companies have implemented hybrid models, where some are in office and rest work from home. A survey conducted by Breeze of 1,000 qualified respondents indicated that 47% of employees have been dealing with remote work anxiety or FOMO. An apt term coined, where there is pressure to be constantly connected has fueled anxiety, and stress. This has impacted productivity and employee mental health.

In the midst of this conflict it is time to Find the Balance with proactive strategies to navigate the technology- work-life balance tightrope.

Regularly assess your priorities, to maintain equilibrium between technology and personal life. Foster a supportive work culture to encourage open communication about work-life balance, and setting respectful boundaries.

By acknowledging the challenges and leveraging the opportunities, technology can become a tool for a more balanced and fulfilling life.
